The fact that Burgess gets this tone right writing in the first person is incredible. The interpretation that seems to be rather popular is that those carrying out this ultra-violence have an orange for a brain, which is being operated by clockwork, and thus they have no real control over it. The concept behind it seems interesting to me but I am not sure if I'd like the writing style in it. The "slang" is Russian, written out in Latin characters rather than Cyrillic. He also refuses to ever kill anyone—for example, even as he leaves the author and his wife battered and raped in a trashed home, he remarks, ‘But they’ll llive.’ This is why he is horrified to learn the old lady he’d robbed had died (from the dick-shaped statue he rammed in her face in the film, or from the bust of Beethoven he whacked her in the temple with in the book), and in the book he imagines her cats crying to be fed with no-one there to feed them.
